For the first time in a few years, Frosty Forest featured falling flakes of snow, and families of all ages flocked for the free fun. The free event featured ice carving, horse drawn hayrides, sled dogs, kids crafts, a bonfire on the beach, a food truck and the opportunity to get to know local first responders, all while surrounded by the natural splendor that is Green Lakes State Park. Attendees were able to donate non-perishable food to support the Foodbank of CNY. This year's winter is off to the best start in the last few years and the crowd was ready for it. Snowmen were made, snowballs thrown, and jack frost nipped at noses. The weather waffled between snow and drizzle but did nothing to dampen attendees' spirits.

All of the attractions were a hit. Kids were fascinated by the carvings, unable to believe that these large sculptures were made of ice, and families made good use of the opportunity to get a family photo on the sculpted ice bench. At times the line for the hayrides stretched from the parking lot, and down along the road, but it moved quickly and no one seemed to perturbed by it. If anything the kids seemed to appreciate having time to play in the snow and among the trees alongside the line.

Outside of the old admin building, people lined up to give belly rubs to the sled dogs, who seemed equally as happy to be on the receiving end of all the attention. Inside, the fireplaces were blazing and parents were able to warm up and learn about goings on at the Manlius Library while their kids decorated their own snowman crafts. In the Environmental Education Center, rangers were educating people on the unique natural features of the park, and kids loved learning to identify the tracks the various critters they might see in the park, from opossums and skunks, to squirrels and even owls!

The winters in CNY can be long and dreary, especially after the hustle and bustle of the holidays in past. Frosty Forest is a great way to bring the community together to appreciate the natural beauty we have on our doorstep, a delightful break from the ordinary, and a bargain at any budget.
